Originally, the emerald cut was mainly used for emerald gemstones, hence its name. It has truncated corners and a broad and flat panel resembling steps of stairs when viewed from above. This style is referred to as a "stair cut". The emerald is typically made up of 57 facets, although the number of rows of facets can vary.
